Sardinia: Five Charming Small Towns to Visit

When you think of Sardinia, stunning crystal-clear waters and pristine white sandy beaches likely come to mind. However, Sardinia offers much more beyond its coastline. Join me on an extraordinary journey through five charming small towns that you must include in your itinerary when exploring this captivating island.

1. Iglesias: Discover a Hidden Gem in the Southwest of Sardinia

Nestled in the southwest corner of Sardinia, Iglesias charms visitors with its rich historical significance and a population of 27,000. Iglesias used to serve as a bishop’s seat and a royal city during the Catalan-Aragonese domination, but it has evolved over time. Today, it stands as a captivating historical destination buzzing with vibrant energy, especially during the summer months. Don’t miss the picturesque Corso Matteotti, where colorful umbrellas create a lively ambiance as you can see in this Instagram reel from last year. This was shot in August at 4 pm during siesta time and nobody was around.

Where to stay in Iglesias?

We stayed right on Corso Matteotti in this b&b. It was small but clean and with A/C and the location is unbeatable. There was also a few snacks and coffee in the room for breakfast. It was perfect for one night.

2. Bosa: Where Colorful Beauty Meets Serenity

Situated in the province of Oristano, Bosa is renowned as one of Italy’s most exquisite villages. With just 8,500 inhabitants, this town exudes charm and tranquility. Prepare to be captivated by colorful buildings lining its streets, a hilltop castle overlooking the town, and a gentle river which gracefully flows through its center. Bosa’s breathtaking scenic beauty is an unmissable highlight during your Sardinian adventure.

Where to stay in Bosa?

Bosa is a relatively small town and staying either on the main Corso or in one of the colorful houses leading to the Castle is definitely amazing. We always only day tripped here so I cannot recommend any from my own experience. However, I was told that Locanda di Corte is truly amazing and worth all the hype. Another nice options are Domo ‘e sa rosa e S’Ammentu House. When looking for a place to stay in Bosa, bear in mind that cars are not allowed in the historic center and the streets are cobblestone and inclined. It’s definitely not ideal if you a carry a big suitcase.

Where to eat in Bosa?

Here I will have to mention again Locanda di Corte which a not-to-miss when in Bosa. It is not only a hotel but also a very successful restaurant which offers traditional Sardinian food with a modern twist.
Right on Corso Vittorio Emanuele you can find Bacco Bistrot, a trendy boho chic restaurant which offers tapas, amazing sandwiches, charcuterie boards and other delicacies.
Don Carlo Delicatessen serves amazing breakfasts and brunches and you can also try their Malvasia wine degustation menu. If you are in the mood for pizza, head to Civico Uno. And last but not least personal favorite “pan polpo” which is practically octopus salad in a huge piece of bread. Grab one in Pescheria del Corso.

This year we also tried an amazing experience just five minutes drive from Bosa’s historic centre. Aperitivo tra gli ulivi is a romantic picnic experience set in an olive grove. Here you can enjoy some delicious local wine and snacks while listening to live music as the sun goes down.

3. SAN PANTALEO: AN IDYLLIC MOUNTAIN RETREAT

Nestled among majestic mountains above the famous Costa Smeralda, San Pantaleo offers a serene escape from the bustling coastal areas. With origins dating back to 800 BC, San Pantaleo has transformed into a captivating destination, particularly in the last century. The town radiates a delightful village atmosphere infused with a bohemian vibe, attracting artists and writers drawn to the area’s immense natural beauty.

4. Posada: A Charming Coastal Haven

Adding another gem to your Sardinian adventure, Posada is a delightful coastal town that should not be missed. Located in the province of Nuoro, Posada boasts a captivating blend of history, natural beauty, and Mediterranean charm. As you stroll through its picturesque streets, you’ll be enchanted by the medieval atmosphere and the impressive Posada Castle, perched on a hilltop overlooking the town. Take in the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. With its sandy beaches and warm hospitality, Posada offers a perfect retreat for beach lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Carlofote, Sardinia, Italy

5. CARLOFORTE: A QUAINT FISHING AND RESORT TOWN

Located on the picturesque island of San Pietro, Carloforte is a small town steeped in fascinating history. Fishermen families originally from Pegli, Liguria, and the Tunisian island of Tabarka founded Carloforte, leaving their cultural influences evident in its language and cuisine. Wander through its narrow streets and alleys, gently ascending a slight slope, to enjoy stunning sea views, a charming marina, and ancient defensive fortifications. Carloforte’s unique blend of Mediterranean beauty and rich heritage will enchant you.

where to stay in Carloforte?

We stayed two nights in Carloforte and chose B&B 24 Maggio as our base for exploring this little town. Our room was super spacious, modern and clean. There was a common kitchen and a large patio where we could enjoy our breakfast which the kind host prepared for us. It was also very central and there was a parking lot right behind in front of a church.
